April 8, 2011 - Launching Bird Spike

If you live in any major metro area of India, you are no stranger to problems caused by birds. Bird droppings cause damage to our investments, are particularly not a pleasant site, and may also result in human health issues (avian flu remember). We all love birds but wouldn't it be ideal if they didn't sit on our property? Moreover, wouldn't it be great if we could manage this without causing any harm to them? Well, now you can.

KK has developed bird spikes which when attached to any surface create an unappealing environment for the birds to roost. These spikes consist of stainless steel wires attached to a polycarbonate base. The wires discourage birds from sitting on the surface without harming them (they are blunt at the tip).

KK bird spikes offer many benefits

  • Virtually unlimited life - since the wires are made from stainless steel 304 grade which doesn't corrode
  • Transparent polycarbonate base makes it non obtrusive
  • Eliminates maintenance costs
  • Greater coverage area compared to competitive products, i.e., lower investment
  • Easy to install with either glue or screws
So now you can protect your investment and your health by making a small investment in bird spikes. You can learn more by visiting our website by clicking here.

Dec 17, 2010 - NEW PRODUCT: Double Side Boundary Wall

KK has now completed the development of an innovative boundary wall system that allows a design to be reproduced on both faces of the boundary wall slab. These double sided panels are a significant improvement over the single sided panels with gurmala finish on one face. Double sided panels are aesthetically appealing whether you are on the inside or the outside.

Currently we are focusing on providing panels with brick finish on both of the front and the back sides. However, the system we have developed is adaptable to any customer specific design.

We will be ramping up production of these panels in the months to come.

Nov 21, 2010 - NEW PRODUCT: Fiber Concrete Spacers & Cover Blocks

KK has introduced fiber concrete spacers for providing specified concrete cover to rebars used in RCC construction.

These fiber concrete spacers have three primary advantages over plastic spacers. First, they have better load bearing capacity. Second, they have better bonding with in-situ concrete as they are made from the same material. Third and most importantly, they are more cost-effective.

KK makes fiber concrete spacers in tight quality controlled conditions to ensure a minimum concrete compressive strength of 35 MPa.

To reduce warehousing cost, fiber concrete spacers are available that can provide two spacings or three spacings in one spacer. For example, both 40 mm and 50 mm spacing can be obtained in one spacer.

The fiber concrete spacers are available with and without hole for tying wire. With hole fiber concrete spacers are recommended for vertical surfaces and horizontal surafces where foot traffic is a possibility. On request, we can provided m.s or galvanized tying wire pre-inserted into the spacers with holes.

Oct 11, 2010 - NEW PRODUCT: Decorative Finish Chair Bench

Most of you are probably familiar with our omni-present chair bench in red colour which has now become a staple for providing seating at railway platforms, parks, restaurants, and educational institutions across India. We would not be boasting if we were to categorize it as an innovative product that has revolutionzed the outdoor seating category.

We have now introduced an improved version of this successful product. In the old version of the product the red coating on the top of panels was susceptible to wear and tear after a few years and thus required some form of annual maintenance. In this improved product we have done away with this red coating. Instead we have polished the top surface of concrete to yield a beautiful, decorative finish. The new version of our chair bench is not only more beautiful but also requires no maintenance.

Oct 11, 2010 - Case Study: Precast Boundary Wall for Vishram Vridh Ashram SHEOWS, Garh Mukteshwar, U.P.

Vishram Vridh Ashram SHEOWS is a social service organization focused on providing old age homes for the terminally ill patients. SHEOWS is building a new ashram in the idylic setting of Garh Mukteshwar and wanted a cost effective, yet aesthetically pleasing boundary wall to be built in a short time period. KK was commissioned to build a boundary wall with our brick finish precast panels and columns. Although the initial requirement was for a length of 300 meters, the client, after being pleased with the concept, increased the requirement to 500 meters.

The grey colour of the precast components contrasts beautifully with the surrounding greenery to deliver a tranquil atmosphere.

Sept 1, 2010 - COST BENCHMARKING

We ran a cost comparison of a precast wall built with 40 mm thick slabs against a 9 inch thick brick wall. At current costs, the precast wall is almost 30% cheaper than a brick wall (Note: the cost comparison is before prevailing taxes)

In addition to the above one time costs, a precast concrete boundary wall also has lower life time costs in terms of:

  • Longer Life span (precast concrete has lasted for more than 100 years)
  • No need for plastering on an on going basis

Sept 1, 2010 - Spotlight Project: Supply of Explosion resistant security jersey barriers to Delhi Police

Delhi police is gearing up to provide security during the upcoming commonwealth games. One of their security initiatives is to provide road barriers that not only can withstand collisions with speeding vehicles but also will not splinter due to an explosion and cause consequential damage.

To address this need we have modified our jersey barrier in three areas. First, we have incorporated vertical cavities in the barrier through which one can drive four anchor pins. Anchor pins will further prevent the barrier from being displaced due to a collision with a moving vehicle. Second, we have incorporated steel fiber into the concrete mix so as to prevent the concrete from breaking apart and becoming projectiles in the event of an explosion. Third, we have strengthened the wire ropes on both sides that are used to tie two adjacent barriers together. As a result, connected barriers will act like a monolithic member. These changes have made the jersey barrier a formidable first layer of defense.

If you are in Delhi during the commonwealth games, you are sure to see these barriers very soon in attractive colours.

Aug 1, 2010 - Two Easy Ways to Grow Grass in High Traffic Areas

We all know that grass if left on its own will be difficult to establish in high-traffic areas. One can overcome this problem by using a couple of ways without detracting from the beauty of the grass. One way of doing so is to use plastic grass grids to protect the grass roots from damage. Or you can use precast concrete grass pavers or grass grids to accomplish the same objective. Learn more about these options of growing grass in high-traffic areas.
Use Plastic Grass Grids
Plastic Grass Grid
You can capture the beauty of grass in high traffic areas in a non-obtrusive fashion by using KGM plastic grass grids. Plastic grass grids create a barrier between grass roots and the applied load. They do so by evenly distributing and transferring the applied load, e.g., truck, to the surface below. In simple terms they act like grass reinforcement. The main advantage of plastic grass grids is that they are not visible once the grass has established.

KGM plastic grass grid is available in one size 325mm x 325mm x 32 mm. KGM plastic grass grids, due to their honey comb design and virgin material, are strong enough to withstand any normally encountered load.

Use Concrete Grass Grids or Grass Pavers

Concrete Grass Grid
Precast concrete grass grid or grass pavers have been used in India for establishing grass in high-traffic areas for many years. The grid pattern of the concrete can also add to the decorative beauty of grass.

KK offers Precast Concrete Grass Grids/Pavers in two sizes 600x400x70 and 300x300x60. In our experience, the larger size is more visually appealing than the smaller due to fewer joint lines.

Jul 1, 2010 - KK Introduces Innovative Manhole Covers SUBSCRIBE TO OUR MONTHLY NEWSLETTER

In our 25 years experience of making precast concrete manhole covers and frames, we have realized that the current IS code has failed to meet some of the primary functions for which it was designed.

The IS code for Heavy Duty covers provides for 2mm thick mild steel sheet around the periphery of the cover and two mild steel lifting hooks placed about 2 to 3 inches away from the extreme edge of the cover. It also provides for a gap of 5mm around the cover between the cover and the frame besides a test load of 20 MT for failure.

All the above specifications except the test load have miserably failed to provide a cover which can be opened and closed as and when required, due to the following reasons explained. First, rusting and subsequent swelling of the mild steel rim compresses and hardens the dust collected in the 5mm gap between the cover and frame. This makes it practically impossible to remove the cover from the frame. Second, the hooks are so positioned that the workman who is trying to remove the cover by usually available tool, i.e pickaxe, gets no leverage. In this process, sometimes the workman pulls out the hook from the cover. Common sense would dictate that the fulcrum should be obtained from an object away from the object the workman is trying to lift. Third, the m.s. hooks corrode with time and ultimately fail.

Recognizing these issues, we have modified the design of the manhole cover in three areas:
  • The metal strip around the cover has been deleted, since it was not to remain for a long time anyway
  • Position of the lifting hooks has been shifted to the extreme edges of the cover so that when using a pickaxe to move the cover, the frame edge automatically becomes the fulcrum
  • The mild steel hooks have been HOT DIP GALVANISED to prevent rusting of hooks for a long time to come

The ultimate result of these improvements is a product that is user friendly and low maintenance.

Dec 1, 2009 - KK launches for the first time in India Precast Reinforced Concrete Light Poles.

KK introduces architectural light poles in precast reinforced concrete meant for gardens, recreational areas, parking lots, and industrial lighting. These light poles are a cost-effective substitute to traditional steel light poles. Moreover, precast concrete light poles have longer life as they are not susceptible to corrosion as steel light poles are. Currently, light poles are available in octagonal cross-section with a mounting height ranging from 11.5 to 15 feet. The light pole can be directly embedded in ground or bolted on to a concrete foundation. The light pole incorporates a conduit running along the length of the light pole and a recessed hand hole for cable entrance and fuse. The light pole also incorporates a steel pipe at the top to which the light fixture can be attached.

Nov 1, 2009 - KK launches an innovative solution to urban tree problem

We all love trees for their beauty and their ability to keep the environment clean yet trees are the most neglected entities on the urban Indian roads now days. The urban Indian road infrastructure has not adequately planned for cohabitation of trees, human beings, and vehicles. We are running out of space and the easy solution is to encroach upon the space occupied by the silent spectators, i.e., trees. We are sure that each one of us has witnessed a tree on the road side that just does not have the breathing room to grow because the area around the trees has been concreted to the extent that water cannot reach its roots. This situation is just not sustainable and some things going to give if something is not done.

To address this major problem, KK has developed a precast concrete tree surround that is cost effective, durable, theft-proof, and elegant. This innovative tree-surround incorporates holes to allow water to reach the tree roots and is suitable for trees up to a diameter of 450 mm (18 inches). The tree surround is assembled from 4 identical components. The top surface of the tree surround has been ground to a smooth finish to add to the beauty of the road infrastructure.
